The WHIN Approach

The Washington Heights and Inwood Music Community Charter School (“WHIN Music Charter School” or “WHIN”) will provide our diverse student population with rigorous academic instruction, intensive music education and a positive learning environment so that every student can thrive academically and personally.

El Sistema

Every WHIN student participates in both Orchestra and Choir every single day in the El Sistema tradition. El Sistema is a unique social program that was founded in Venezuela to build community through excellence. The goal is to effect social change through intensive daily ensemble music education. Working in an ensemble enables all children to experience being an asset to their community and grow into citizen artists prepared to make the world a better place.

Character Building

Developing our students character is a key component to their success. Through our WHIN Ways of Being, we help students develop crucial 21st Century skills like collaboration, responsibility, self-control, grit, curiosity, integrity, gratitude, and other life skills which help them find their unique voice while navigating the complex world they will inherit .

WHIN has a rigorous and progressive academic program that equips students with the skills and knowledge to be well-rounded and successful. Aligned to national and state standards, our program is a balance of inquiry, cross-content, and differentiation in a joyful environment to engage and challenge each child. Our curriculum programs are top rated, integrating character skills, technology, and hands-on application.

Our Program

Students at WHIN thrive with our rigorous, inquiry-driven, project based curriculum, aligned to Common Core State Standards and differentiated for each learner’s unique needs.

WHIN takes a balanced literacy approach and will use EL Education’s K-5 English Language Arts curriculum, which is a comprehensive, standards-based core literacy program that engages teachers and students through compelling, real-world content.

At WHIN, students experience math through a lens of fun, exciting discovery. Math units are taught inclusively where multiple skills and standards are interwoven and revisited throughout the year to ensure student mastery. Deep conceptual understanding is reached through concrete and hands-on experience.

WHIN offers two periods of music a day for all students. Our ensembles focus on vocal and instrumental music, with both strands building strong foundations of music literacy so students become authentic life-long and life-wide music makers.

Social Studies at WHIN includes case studies where students explore rich topics while using the outside world as their classroom and laboratory to understand complex topics and meet grade level standards.

Students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) receive high-quality instruction in inclusion classrooms where Co-Teachers differentiate and provide specially designed instruction to ensure the curriculum is accessible to all students. Special Education services provided at WHIN include: Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classrooms, SETSS, Speech, OT, PT, Counseling, and Hearing Services.

WHIN offers a dedicated Science class for all students where students learn by doing hands-on experiments based on the highly-regarded FOSS curriculum. Our FOSS curriculum fosters students’ curiosity of the natural world while students engage in active investigations, collaborate with peers, record observations, extend learning outdoors and in real world contexts.

WHIN sees regular physical activity as well as learning about our bodies, wellness, and health as a way to live a healthy and balanced life. With this philosophy in mind all WHIN students will have 150 minutes of P.E. as well as 80 minutes of recess throughout the week.

School counseling services are available to students needing individual or social skills group support. In addition to the K-5 School Counselor, WHIN students are able to receive therapy services from the Social Worker based in the NY-Presbyterian School-Based Health Clinic in the building.

Social Emotional Learning is built into every students’ school day and delivered by classroom teachers. WHIN implements the Second Step curriculum which provides lessons and activities aimed at building students social-emotional skills.

English Language Learners (ELLs) receive ELL services in inclusion classrooms where Co-Teachers differentiate the curriculum and provide meaningful opportunities for listening, speaking, reading, and writing to support learners’ English language acquisition. In addition to ELL services in the inclusion classrooms, WHIN has a dedicated ELL Interventionist who supports students needing additional services by pushing-in or pulling-out of the classroom.
