Mission

The Washington Heights and Inwood Music Community Charter School (“WHIN Music Charter School” or “WHIN”) will provide our diverse student population with rigorous academic instruction, intensive music education and a positive learning environment so that every student can thrive academically and personally .

El Sistema

WHIN Music Community Charter School is the first El-Sistema based school in New York City and ensure every student’s success by implementing a rigorous, inquiry-driven, project-based academic curriculum with two hours of daily music instruction based on the El Sistema model, whose inclusive philosophies and individual/social benefits for its participants.

Our Program

Students at WHIN thrive with our rigorous, inquiry-driven, project based curriculum, aligned to Common Core State Standards and differentiated for each learner’s unique needs.

WHIN takes a balanced literacy approach, using EL Education’s K-5 English Language Arts curriculum, a comprehensive, standards-based core literacy program through compelling, real-world content.

Using Bridges in Mathematics students experience math through a lens of exciting discovery. Math units create rich scenarios for learners, and are revisited throughout the year to ensure student mastery.

Our program helps students become citizen- artists in the spirit of El Sistema, supporting the development of students’ unique identity, self-worth, and empathy towards others.

WHIN offers two periods of music a day for all students. Our ensembles focus on vocal and instrumental music, with both strands building strong foundations of music literacy so students become authentic life-long and life-wide music makers.

Our FOSS curriculum fosters students’ curiosity of the natural world while students engage in active investigations, collaborate with peers, record observations, extend learning outdoors and in real world contexts. WHIN offers a dedicated Science classfor all students every day where students learn by doing hands-on experiments based on the highly-regarded FOSS curriculum.

In our holistic, balanced curriculum, students learn to respect, develop, and take care of their physical health.
